FROM 3D SCANS TO HISTORIC SPLENDOR: PRESERVING NYC’S ARCHITECTURAL GEMS WITH MODERN TECHNOLOGY

From 3D Scans to Historic Splendor: Preserving NYC’s Architectural Gems with Modern Technology

14 AUGUST 2024

We’re excited to announce our latest project in collaboration with our client Finger Management Corp the restoration of a historic Neo-Renaissance building in New York City. Constructed in 1925, this seven-story cooperative residence has been a cornerstone of the community for nearly a century.
Our journey began with an on-site visit, where Wilmer P. Villa (Wil) conducted a comprehensive visual inspection and performed 3D scanning to capture the intricate terracotta ornaments, majestic stone details, and elaborate metal cornices. This data was then utilized by Nimer Arenas Jimenez and the rest of our Building Information Modeling (BIM) team to create an accurate 3D model, revealing areas needing attention, such as cracks in terracotta, oxidation in the metalwork, and wear in the stone elements.

Why restore this historic building now?
1. Preservation of Heritage Value: By acting early, we protect irreplaceable historic details and ensure that this piece of New York’s architectural legacy continues to enrich the community.
2. Reduced Long-Term Costs: Addressing issues such as cracks and oxidation promptly helps prevent more extensive and costly repairs down the road.
3. Safety and Sustainability: Maintaining the structure ensures safety for residents and visitors. Restoration also promotes sustainability by preserving existing materials and minimizing the need for new resources.

Our restoration plan includes replacing deteriorated terracotta pieces, recoating stone ornaments, filling brick joints, and replacing worn bricks. This project reflects our commitment to preserving the city’s architectural history and restoring the building to its original elegance.

Stay tuned as we move through the construction documentation phase and prepare for construction to begin in spring 2025. We’re eager to share more updates along the way!
