🔍 Restoration of the Sidewalk Vault at 515 West 110th Street, New York 🏗️
14 AUGUST 2024
✨ At Mayta + Sebastian Architecture, we’re thrilled to be part of a unique project involving the restoration of an underground sidewalk vault—an essential yet often overlooked feature of New York City’s architecture. Many NYC buildings have these hidden spaces that extend beneath the sidewalks, typically used for storage, utilities, and sometimes to ease building access. These vaults, however, require careful upkeep to ensure safety and longevity.
🔬 To assess the condition of this vault, our team conducted a 3D laser scan and a detailed visual inspection, revealing significant structural wear: cracks in the ceiling, worn expansion joints, rusted metal structures, and deteriorated bricks. Our plan includes a phased restoration, replacing the damaged bricks and metal structures and demolishing and replacing the concrete at the top ⚒️, all while maintaining safe pedestrian passage above.
🌟 Why are regular inspections essential? Here are three reasons:
* Preventing Major Damage: Early identification of structural issues can prevent costly repairs down the road. The sooner problems are addressed, the easier—and more economical—they are to fix.
* Ensuring Safety: Consistent inspections help ensure that these structures are safe, protecting residents and passersby from potential hazards.
* Preserving Functionality and Character: Timely maintenance not only preserves the utility of these vaults but also supports the character and functionality of the city’s unique architecture.
💡 This project showcases our commitment to blending practical restoration with advanced technology, ensuring New York’s architectural fabric remains both functional and true to its urban character.
